BETTER THAN LANGUAGE:
An anthology of new modernist poetries
edited and introduced by Chris Goode

Better Than Language brings together the work of thirteen young poets engaging with the broadest conceivable range of late modernist modes and strategies. Sometimes difficult but always enticing, the restlessly smart poems collected here offer a wide-open invitation to adventurous readers.

The poets represented are: SARAH KELLY | JONNY LIRON | FRANCESCA LISETTE | JOE LUNA | NAT RAHA | LINUS SLUG | JOSH STANLEY | TIMOTHY THORNTON | ANNA TICEHURST | JONTY TIPLADY | MIKE WALLACE-HADRILL | TOMAS WEBER | and STEVE WILLEY

These poems are not here to 'take the edge off', but to stick more edges on. Indeed, the best of these poems are all edge. Edges are where connections are made. Edges are where words meet other words, other ideas, other realities. Don't think about the "cutting edge" (too dull a metaphor now), but about the interface, the periphery, the precipice. The edge is where we stand to feel at its fullest the possibility of change: not fearing loss so much as fearing our aversion to the risk of loss. To stand there, on the edge, takes a little courage, of course: liking you as they must, these poems ask for the best of you. What they give you in return is their company, so you don't have to stand there alone.
